Chelation Therapy – My rough start with DMSA

It took me so long to try Oral Chelation Therapy which basically involves taking a powder that binds to heavy metals such as Mercury and excretes them via your kidneys and urine. Sounds easy doesn’t it?

I’d had some nasty side effects with Cilantro and Chlorella, even MSM, so I was very reluctant to try more products that had anything to do with stirring up toxins.

No-one in New Zealand could help me with Chelation. I wondered whether I was the only one in the country thinking I had some mercury poisoning and I wanted to get it out? Surely not. Had I gone that mental that I thought I needed this but I didn’t really? And how was I going to get some DMPS or DMSA into the country? (the link is below)

That’s why it took me so long; because it was all too hard and unknown. Years went by.

After reading Dr Andrew Cutler’s book Amalgam Illness I decided to try the lowest dose of 12.5mg of DMSA every 3 or 4 hours for 3 or 4 days straight. Then a break a of a week or so to allow my body to recover and push more toxins into my bloodstream for removal. The regular dosing keeps blood levels of the drug at levels which keep extracting metals without redistributing too much. These drugs either don’t get everything or cause minerals to imbalance, so there MAY be redistribution symptoms. It can be tough on your body in some way that it can cause a lot of fatigue. I won’t pretend to know exactly what goes in inside. Just do your homework on how much to take and what supplementation you need; vitamins like Vitamin C, E, Zinc and Magnesium The drug binds to metals in your blood and they get excreted. Then your body pushes more metals out from tissue into your blood for extraction and you do another cycle.

So, Day 1 went well with no problems. At the end of Day 2 I was starting to really get tired and was really dragging myself around. I was committed to finishing the cycle so hung in there until the end of day 3. In hindsight I should have stopped and started the following week on half that dose.

When i woke the next morning I literally could hardly move. Every muscle was so weak and sore I could not properly move until 3pm. I had completely seized up. I was really concerned and I thought i’d really wrecked myself once and for all. It happened again the next day, I could hardly move until the afternoon.

It took 3 or 4 days to slowly come right and within a week I think I was better than before I started, so that gave me some hope. I decided to continue with DMPS, not DMSA, which meant I could dose every 8 hours and get some sleep throughout the dosing. After my little setback, I decided to start on 5mg DMPS to be safe. This went much better although on Day 3 I was struggling to finish it because of fatigue. Recovery was much better but decided to do some rounds at 2.5mg just to be safe. That’s what I’m on now and hardly getting any side effects after my 10th ’round’ so will increase back up to 5mg soon and see how that goes. Slow and steady is the name of this game. I will add Alpha Lipoic Acid at a later date, as I understand this is a fat soluble chelator that cleans the brain.

Supplements are crucial while ‘on round’ and ‘off round’. I average 1 round a month which is very conservative and will delay recovery but I want to keep my mineral levels steady after working so hard to improve them with Nutritional Balancing (NB). Chelation is tough on the kidneys and body in general so I am very careful about this. My NB practitioner would prefer that I do not do these and believes chelation is unnecessary. He believes that the NB program will allow the body to push these toxins out at the right time and chelation forces them out which messes with body chemistry. This makes sense but I’m human and I think I know better so I might get taught another lesson here. We’ll see. More info on Chelation is at:

Depending on how this all goes, I may switch to Dr Chris Shade’s (Quicksilver Scientific) protocol. I know little about it, DYOR, but it seems to be less harsh on the body and excretes through the bowels not kidneys so I’ll keep an eye on his work. Intestinal Metal Detox (IMD) is his main product . I understand MetalSweep is similar, it’s a silica based product. Dr Cutler doesn’t think they can work which doesn’t help knowing which way to go. Dr Shade’s website is:

Feb 2018 Update: Please read my latest blog posts to see what’s has been working for me. I believe that anyone has to have a reasonable level of health to tolerate Chelation therapy. I’m sure that once I get nutritionally balanced (not using Dr Wilson’s regime as it didn’t work for me or anyone else I know) and balance out my Thyroid (TSH 1 to 1.5) then Chelation may be very effective. I may not need it at all but will post any further attempts at Chelation. Also RIP Dr Andy Cutler; his heart was in the right place.

Hi John, I can’t find the link that shows where to buy DMSA in NZ. Could you please share that info with me? I desperately seek DMSA! Thank you in advance!
    Kind regards,
    Rebecca

    Hi John!

Thought I’d share with you my experience and my protocol.

I agree that nutritional balancing is NOT the answer. However, Dr. Wilson was right in doing daily coffee retention enimas. . It does act as dialysis and cleans the blood every 4 minutes along with detoxing the liver.

The body’s detox pathways must be prepared for chelation. I prepped mine with daily coffee enimas for 6 months while I looked for a doctor who was knowledge in heavy metals, mold, and parasites.

I almost lost my job and in desperation of trying many holistic treatments took a real time lab test for mold, which came back off the charts. ( western medicine said it was in my head).

This led me to a mold specialist. However, I relapsed within 6 months of doing all supposed right things.

My relapse in health led me to suspect my gut as it was never addressed by any doctors ever.

I tested positive for parasites ( false positive and false negative normal so test not reliable.)

This led me to the “parasite summit” and Dr. Todd Watts work. He too experienced relapse in health until he addressed parasites.

There is an ORDER of doing things in the body.

Heavy metals in the body’s tissues including the brain effects the thyroid and your immune system creating a low oxygen environment for other pathogens like mold, parasites, Lyme to take a home.

The mold blocks your body’s methylation process so glutathione and folic acid production stop. Take “Dutch test” for cortisone cycle and if over production of estrogen so that you can see if you need quicksilver “dim” for mold block created by excess estrogen and ” broccoprotect”

Mucoid plaque/Biofilm are created (excess mucus production.. your body’s defense) that actually protects the mold, parasites, and Lyme that coexist with heavy metals making it almost impossible to find anything effective In ridding the body of these pathogens.

“Microbe formulas” has the only natural effective water soluable ( toxins stored in fat cells) formulas to clean out the gut of mucoid plaque/ biofilm, systemically bind the heavy metals, systemically bind the mycotoxins allowing you to prep your body’s detox pathways for chelation. This may take 6 months before beginning chelation.

I do dmsa (Livingstrong as you listed) 5 days on 10 days off. I worked up slowly to 100mg/100mg doing 4-6 body cycles then added 100mg ALA for brain phase doing 4-6 brain phase cycles and then repeat body etc.

Bodybio has excellent MTk daily mineral kit. Heavy metals compete with minerals so on “off cycles” use daily minerals.

Heal the gut using bone broth fast, keotone, and opticleanse.

13 months later, I’m swimming, biking, hiking. My quality of life is returning.

Excellent article on detoxing on cellular level. https://drpompa.com/additional-resources/180_solutions/true-cellular-detox-a-top-5-strategy-to-create-your-best-health-ever.

    Best of luck.

Hi Nicole, thanks so much for sharing your protocol. I’m envious of that nice big dose of DMSA/ALA you’re tolerating. I too underestimated and misunderstood how important ‘a working gut’ was as a foundation for proper detoxing. I agree, the liver/gallbladder/gut process has to functioning reasonably well to tolerate the harsh chelators like DMSA. Leaky guts have to stop leaking to some degree. And thyroid, ideally should be around 1.5 TSH. Balancing this was the first big improvement for me. Then to reboot the gut I took milk thistle, clay/charcoal binders, kidney tonic, gut neutraceuticals and probiotics. It has been overwhelming at times but once I understood what I was trying to achieve then consistency and tweaking products eventually started to work. I always thought I had to go straight for the toxins whether they were in my brain or organs but success is in strengthening your core systems first. By the time people get to actual chelation then they shouldn’t be suffering too much at all – the worst is over and then it’s a matter of time finishing detox.

It seems all our protocols are slightly different but the underlying process and order is similar. A bit premature perhaps but I’ve recently done some DMSA rounds at 12.5 mg with no issues at all. Compared my earlier attempts when my body was in no state to do them, I’ve also made good progress. I’m having beers with friends and waking up fine, food is tasting good again, I actually enjoy doing the things I used to and look forward to things instead of dreading them. I’ve still got more work to do but I know what I’m doing these days. I’m certain I could be doing more but what I’m doing is slowly working and that’s good enough.

Best of luck with what seems like the tail end of your recovery.

I’m doing EDTA via supository – done it 50x so far & my gym cardio is twice as good

I will do it another 100 times then drop to once per week. I know EDTA is not known for certain if it passes blood brain barrier where DMSA definitely does. Glutathione also does I understand.

PEMF if you have a strong enough machine can also detox heavy metals from the brain so there are plenty of options.

DMSA is on ebay but I’m not sure it will get passed customs.

Hi Gareth, thanks for sharing that info. I’m not certain DMSA actually crosses the blood brain barrier but you could be right. You may need to add Alpha Lipoic Acid in at some stage of your program to pull out metals from brain / central nervous system. A binder is recommended when using this, perhaps DMSA, I’m sure you are aware of all this. For moderate to severe cases ALA can be a nightmare so must be used with great care. I use living network to order DMSA, DMPS and ALA and have had no issues with customs. Best of luck with your recovery.

Great that customs haven’t given you any grief. Medsafe opened my last ALA/DMSA package, but resealed it with no comment. As far as I can see DMPS and DMSA are not prescription meds in NZ, but I haven’t had confirmation of that, so good to see your email as I need to order more. It’s a long old journey to good health!

It sure is along journey to good health for us with long term toxicity issues. The up-side is that we learn so many things about how to stay healthy and this will pay long term dividends I’m sure.

Living Network who send the chelation products are very aware of how strict customs can be so they provide all neccesary documentation. This whole detox thing is hard enough without any more road blocks.

All the best with your healing journey
